The United States, which holds the presidency of the Summit of the Americas process, convened a virtual meeting of the governments that are part of the Summit, in order to strengthen the protection of environmental defenders, in line with the commitments assumed by the leaders during the Ninth Summit in Los Angeles, on June 9, 2022.
The meeting was led by the Assistant Secretary of State for International Oceanic, Scientific and Environmental Affairs, Mónica Medina, and the Assistant Administrator of the Office of International and Tribal Affairs of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Jane Nishida.
The Alliance for Land, Indigenous and Environmental Defenders NGO coalition will present recommendations to governments.
The United States advocates for increased protections for environmental advocates who use the fundamental tools of democracy to contribute to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as well as reduce the effects of climate change.
We must all work to prevent threats and
violence against environmental defenders and ensure that there is greater accountability for such acts of violence.
